PhD in Management

Doctoral programme in Management aims to widen the understanding of the world of a doctoral student by giving deepened knowledge of organisational theories and society whilst developing critical and analytical thinking and research skills.   

After completing the programme one has the ability to make continuous and logical arguments and synthesise new ideas. 

PhD in Management offers challenges and career opportunities in the academia and also raises your value on labour market. 

Doctoral programme in Management, focusing on the research of business, public and civil society organisations, is the only PhD programme in management in Estonia, and offers a comprehensive perspective on management. The programme was fully accredited in June 2009.

The continuity of R&D undertaken at EBS is guaranteed by the programme, as all students are integrated in the in-house research activities by their local supervisor. The programme is taught in English and student body involves students from several countries. 

Programme is managed by the EBS Research Council, that is responsible for on-going development activities and quality assurance. Doctoral students have a study consultant who helps them with planning their studies.

The total volume of doctoral programme in management is 240 ECTS, of which the studies give 60 ECTS and research activity 180 ECTS. Studies consist of compulsory courses (33 ECTS), electives (12 ECTS), doctoral seminars (9 ECTS) and pedagogical internship (6 ECTS). The programme curriculum serves as a guideline for doctoral students, but each student has the right and obligation to put together an individual study plan, declaring each semester any differences from the nominal studies. 

All doctoral students have the opportunity to go on exchange with the goal to pass part of their studies or conduct research in a foreign university. Such exchange is highly encouraged. 

Research of the doctoral student is carried out according to individual study plan under the guidance of supervisor. The progress of doctoral student is evaluated yearly by the evaluation committee formed by the Research Council.

The doctoral thesis presented in order to apply for the doctor’s degree may be in form of an independent thesis, a series of publications provided with the summarising review article, or a published monograph.


Compulsory courses of the doctoral programme are:

  • Quantitative Research Methods;
  • Institutional Economics;
  • Research Design;
  • Social Systems and Organisational Theories;
  • Contemporary Paradigms of Social Science;
  • Management Theories;
  • Systems Science.

Elective courses of the doctoral programme are:  

  • Strategic Management;
  • Cost-Benefit Analyses;
  • Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital;
  • Logic;
  • Cultural Psychology;
  • Theories of Management of Organisational Changes;
  • Ethics and Responsibility in Management;
  • Fundamentals of Cybernetics and Emergent Systems;
  • Special Courses on Basis of Specialised Literature (reading courses).

There are three different options for building up your doctoral thesis:

  1. Series of publications (minimum 3) with a conclusive article that is published by EBS as a dissertation.  The publications must be compliant with the list below and if an article has more than one author the individual contributions must be explained.
  2. Monograph published by EBS as a dissertation. Monograph must be peer-reviewed by at least two internationally recognised and independent scholars. Prerequisite for this option is at least one publication compliant to the list below.
  3. High-level peer-reviewed monograph published by well-known international publisher.

Following list of publications is considered appropriate for publishing your doctoral research:

  1. Scholarly articles published in journals indexed by Thomson Reuters Web of Science;
  2. Scholarly articles published in journals indexed by European Reference Index of the Humanities categories INT1 and INT2; 
  3. Scholarly articles published in in other peer-reviewed international research journals with an ISSN code and international editorial board, which are circulated internationally and open to international contributions; 
  4. Articles/chapters in books published by well-known international publishers;
  5. High-level peer-reviewed research monographs.

Every doctoral student must pass the internship of teaching at university in volume of 6 ECTS. Pedagogical internship takes usually place at the home university (EBS) under the supervision of a professor. Aim of this internship is to give the doctoral students necessary skills and experience of teaching at university level. The volume and period of internship is set in the individual study plan.

Every doctoral student at EBS has the opportunity to visit a foreign university or research institution with a goal to take courses and carry out research. Hosting institution is chosen by the doctoral student himself or with the guidance of the supervisor, and then coordinated with the home university. The goal of the exchange is to increase the circulation of knowledge and establish academic contacts. Length of the exchange can vary from one to five months.

Research exchange can be financed by applying to scholarships from DoRa and Kristjan Jaak programmes. More information on the deadlines, requirements, selection process and size of scholarships can be asked from the Academic Secretary of the school.
